Great teachers have a gift — and a great education. If you want to teach, we'll get you started.
Kirtland offers two associate’s degrees:
teaching and paraprofessional.
The associate’s in teaching degree at Kirtland also is known as the pre-teacher transfer preparation program. It will prepare you to be elementary or secondary teacher. This is your program if you plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to earn a bachelor’s degree in education.
Once you have curriculum information from your chosen university, faculty members, counselors and advisors at Kirtland will:
- customize your freshman and sophomore schedule in order to help you select appropriate transfer courses
- help you map out specific coursework to give you a smooth transfer to the next level of your educational plan
The program is coordinated to link your coursework at KCC to other four-year institutions. You will need to identify which university you plan to transfer to and meet with an advisor during your freshman year at Kirtland.
The paraprofessional program at Kirtland is tailored to those who want to focus primarily on courses that will provide direct benefit on the job. Most paraprofessionals who work in schools that receive Title I funds now are required to:
- complete an associate's degree or two years of study at an institution of higher learning, and/or
- pass a formal assessment to demonstrate knowledge and ability to assist in reading, writing and math instruction
You probably wish you could share your gift in the classroom and begin teaching today. Kirtland will make sure you have a great education and are ready when today finally comes.
