Does Kirtland have a wait list for the nursing program?

We do not maintain a wait list. Applications are not carried over from year to year. Applicants who are not selected for the current year's program should reapply for the following year's program.

Can I skip Level I and apply for Level II?

No…not unless you have already completed a Practical Nursing Program and are working as a LPN. Kirtland's nursing program is "laddered": Level I (Practical Nursing) must be completed before continuing on to Level II (Registered Nursing).

When can I apply for Kirtland's nursing program?

Applications to the nursing program are available between December 1 and March 1. Late applications are not accepted.

How does Kirtland determine who is selected for their nursing program?

Ranking criterion:

  • Date of anticipated completion of prerequisite courses
  • Date of application to the college declaring nursing as program of study
  • Residence within Kirtland's local service area

Does my grade point average influence my ranking into the nursing program?

Grade point average is not a ranking criterion for the program.

  • Level I: minimum grade point average required is 2.5
  • Level II: minimum grade point average required is 3.0

Does Kirtland require an entrance exam to qualify for the nursing program?

No. Not at the current time.

How many applicants are accepted each year?

Level I Full Time: 90
Level I Part Time: 30
Level II Full Time: 40
Level II Part Time: 20

Can Kirtland expand its nursing program in order to accept more students?

No. We have maximized the number of students that our local hospitals can accommodate.

Does Kirtland have a part-time nursing program?

Yes. There are full- and part-time options for both Level I and Level II.

If I'm accepted into the part-time program, can I switch to the full-time program?

No. The part-time program begins prior to the full-time program.

How many days a week is the full-time nursing program?

Level I (3 semesters): 3-4 days a week; Level II (2 semesters): 4-5 days a week.

How many days a week is the part-time nursing program?

Level I (5 semesters): 1-3 days a week; Level II (3 semesters): 2-4 days a week

When does the full-time nursing program start?

The full-time programs begin each fall semester (Level I & II).

When does the part-time program start?

The part-time programs begin each winter semester (Level I & II).

Is there a physical exam required for the nursing program?

Yes. It's called "Required Abilities and Health Care Provider Recommendation of Nursing Student". This form is given to applicants once they have been selected for the program.

Is proof of immunizations required for the program?

Yes. Documentation of immunizations is required upon acceptance into the nursing program.

If I have a felony conviction or a serious misdemeanor conviction, will I be eligible for the nursing program?

Most felony and serious misdemeanor convictions will prevent you from being accepted into the nursing program at Kirtland. Please discuss criminal background convictions with Cynde Kochensparger, Nursing Clinical Coordinator (kochenspargerc@kirtland.edu or phone ext. 306).

I've already had a criminal background check done for my job. Do I have to have another one done?

Yes. Kirtland does not have access to previous fingerprinting reports and cannot accept results from previous sources.

Is there a fee to have a criminal background fingerprinting report processed?

Yes. The cost is approximately $65. This report is not required until you are accepted into the nursing program.

Where are the nursing clinical courses held?

Level I Students are placed in extended care facilities and hospitals in: Gaylord, Grayling, West Branch, and Tawas. Level II students also travel distances for some of the pediatric, obstetric, and mental health clinical experiences.

Are there scholarships available at Kirtland for the nursing program?

Yes. All scholarship information is accessed through the Financial Aid Department. Please refer to their website.

I'm already CPR certified. Do I have to enroll in Kirtland's Standard First Aid Course?

Professional-Provider CPR is required within 90 days of the nursing program's first clinical course. Recertification does not need to be obtained by taking Kirtland's course.

What kind of CPR do I need?

American Heart: Health Care Provider
  or
American Red Cross: Professional Rescuer

Can I apply to more than one nursing school at the same time?

Yes.

Is there a fee required with my application to Kirtland's nursing program?

No.

Are there time expirations on prerequisite classes I have already completed?

No…however: science courses should be relatively current since they are the foundation of the nursing program.

What's the difference between taking BIO 10700 Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology and regular Anatomy & Physiology?

BIO 10700 will prepare a student for Level I nursing only. If a student's goal is to proceed on to the Level II nursing program, regular Anatomy & Physiology I & II should be completed instead of BIO 10700.
