Kirtland Community College is announcing the resignation of men’s and women’s basketball coach Ty McGregor. McGregor began coaching Firebirds mens basketball in January, 2007, and began coaching both the men’s and women’s teams in 2012-13. The resignation is effective immediately.
Athletic Director Don Haskin has canceled all remaining pre-conference games in order to make necessary program adjustments. “We intend to start looking for a coaching replacement immediately and expect to be ready to compete in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) conference season when it begins in January,” said Haskins. “The college is doing everything it can to minimize disruption to the program and our student athletes.”
At their November 21 meeting, the Kirtland Community College Board of Trustees voted 4-2 to suspend the men’s and women’s basketball programs indefinitely following the completion of the 2013-14 season. According to NJCCA league bylaws, regulations for financial aid, and college policy, all current scholarships for student athletes playing basketball will be honored for the duration of their scholarship.
Annually, more than 3,000 students attend a variety of occupational, skilled trades, two-year and transfer degree programs at Kirtland’s locations near Roscommon, Kirtland-Gaylord, Kirtland-West Branch and in Tawas. Kirtland also offers a wide range of online courses and degrees, all of which can be completed from home.
