Kirtland Offers $10 Computer Classes

Kirtland Community College’s Community Education Department is partnering with the Roscommon County Commission on Aging (RCCOA) to bring three informational computer courses to community members in Roscommon and surrounding counties.  “Windows 8” will be offered on Thursday, April 3, “Introduction to Facebook” will be held Thursday, April 10, and “Finding Useful Information on the Internet” will be the topic of a course on Thursday, April 24.  All courses are being held at the RCCOA on 2625 South Townline Road in Houghton Lake and the cost for each is only $10.

“Windows 8” is a hands-on course features the new Windows 8.1 interface, start screen, live tiles, hot corners, charms bar, sky drive, and security features. It’s a great way to get a handle on your new computer or try out Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 system.

In a separate three-hour class, participants will be introduced to the social media program, “Facebook.”  This course explores the elements of Facebook and how to keep up with your friends, family, and community through social media. You will learn what’s needed to start a Facebook profile and also look at:

  • Finding friends
  • Your timeline
  • Understanding your newsfeed
  • Adding picture
  • Sending and receiving private messages
  • Setting up groups
  • How to use Facebook on a phone or tablet
  • How to stay safer on Facebook

Rounding out the series on April 24 is “Finding Useful Information on the Internet.” This three-hour course explores strategies for finding information on the Internet.  Learn how to use meta-search engines, identify files and free programs that you can use on your own computer, and develop techniques to speed you through the process of finding what you want when you want it.

All classes are offered at a pace set for adults and seniors and laptop computers are available for all participants.  An overhead computer projector will enable you to see examples on the screen, giving you the opportunity to try the training exercises, and how to use the skills you learn on either your own computer or a local public access computer.  Kirtland Community Education Director Clay Horton will be the instructor and brings over 25 years of teaching experience to these classes.
