Dean of Student Services
This is an administrative position responsible for providing leadership and management for the student services division, as well as creating and encouraging teamwork and collaboration among divisional staff and within the Kirtland community. The dean leads and engages in strategic planning and promotes creative ideas that enable the student services division and the college to be more productive, efficient, and continuously improve services. The dean is expected to hold and promote the attitude that every student can be successful, that the purpose of the college is to enable students to be so, and to utilize the authority of the position to enable that success.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*
Leads the student services division in upholding, its mission, vision and goals.
Responsible for overall direction and supervision of records and registration, admissions and recruiting, counseling, career and employment services, special populations, student life, student housing, athletics, financial aid, and children’s learning center. The position collaborates with the executive director of Kirtland’s Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC) at Gaylord to ensure the effective operation of student services activities at this and other satellite campuses.
Oversees the administrative software (Jenzabar) used by student services staff and exercises leadership in the application of the software.
Serves as the college registrar.
Reviews and evaluates the following staff: assistant registrar, student services assistant, director of counseling, professional counselor, director of admissions, athletic director, and director of financial aid.
Actively involved in issues that impact student services and students, with the goal of making the college a leader in student services processes.
Advises the president in developing and interpreting data relating to student services to ensure programs correlate with community needs
Provides staff with appropriate professional development and in-service training.
Serves on the college administrative team and other designated ad hoc, college standing committees, and professional organizations.
Responsible for developing and managing the budget for the student services division.
Remains up-to-date with state and federal legislation regarding student services, and ensures that the college’s policies and procedures are congruent with the legislation.
Responsible for enforcing the student code of conduct, and in accordance with policy, renders decisions on student appeals.
Recommends and reviews policies and procedures for the student services division to continuously improve both efficiency and friendly service to our students.
Responsible for planning and coordination of the college’s annual commencement ceremony, college visits, and student orientation.
Prepares and presents enrollment updates and reports.
Coordinates the development of the academic calendar, college catalog, class schedule, and other printed material.
Responsible for student life and works to develop plans for programs and services to promote student life on campus.
Performs other duties as assigned by the president.
SUPERVISION – Works under the general supervision of the college president
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in educational administration, education, or related field
- Minimum of three years of experience in a college student services position including experience using college administrative software; experience in a college registrar capacity is desirable
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administration, and governing boards
- Demonstrated leadership in campus operations and student services administration using quality improvement principles and teams
- Experience in operational planning, policy development, and outcome/needs assessment
- Proven skills in conflict resolution
- Ability to effectively communicate ideas and information, in written and oral format, to students, staff, professional colleagues, governing boards, and the general public in large or small group settings
