The Lady Firebirds performed an incredible feat during the Thanksgiving weekend Oppy Tourney by winning two basketball games with only two hours of rest between games. The Firebirds put forth a solid showing beating Alma’s JV Scots 70-53 and the Mid-Michigan Lady Lakers 64-49.
In game one against Alma, all nine Lady ‘Birds contributed on both offense and defense. Remarkably, every player contributed at least two points, a rebound and an assist. Abbye Gulvas (Standish-Sterling) led the women with 20 points, while sophomore guard Domonique Richards (Detroit Southeastern) played a complete game at both ends with 12 points, two steals and five assists. The women also dominated the Scots on the boards with Cassie Ryckman (Houghton Lake) snatching nine rebounds, Camille Szubelak (Fairview) collecting seven, and Kim Dunn (Gaylord) contributing five “bounds”. The ‘Birds shot a very hot 81% from the charity stripe, helping to make this win a complete team effort.
Two hours later, the ‘Birds beat Mid-Michigan for the second time this season with a very balanced offense. Again, Abbye Gulvas led the Firebirds with 13 points, followed by Camille Szubelak with 11, Domonique Richards with nine, Cassie Ryckman with eight, Brooke Arnold (Gaylord) with seven, Josie Wiltse (Ogemaw Heights) with seven, Kim Dunn with five and Melinda Dunkel (Farwell) with four. In addition to the strong offensive showing, the Lady ‘Birds remained hot on the free-throw line, hitting 17 for 24, or 71% of their shots.
Next up, the unbeaten Lady Firebirds face the Lansing Community College Stars on Friday, Dec.16 at the Kirtland Christmas Tournament in Mio.
