Kirtland Hosting 8th Annual Nursing Conference

Kirtland Community College is sponsoring its 8th annual Nursing Conference on the college’s main campus near Roscommon from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on May 8, 2014.  The conference provides nursing professionals the opportunity to learn more about the Affordable Health Care Act (ACA), earn continuing education (CE) credits and network with professional colleagues from across the state.

Kirtland’s Nursing Department will host its 8th annual Nursing Conference on the Roscommon Campus on May 8.

The highlight of the conference is an in-depth review of the Affordable Health Care Act (ACA) giving participants a clear understanding of the ACA and its implications to the consumer, nurse, and healthcare institutions. This seminar will also focus on nursing’s role as patient advocate and how healthcare organizations may interpret the ACA to make patient care and financial decisions. Presenters and topics include:

  • Jim Fischer MS, MBA, RN, NEA-BC: Vice President, Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer, Munson Medical Center
  • Brett Williams: Mid-Michigan Regional Coordinator, Michigan Consumers for Healthcare. “The ACA in MI: The Pros, the Cons and What’s Next.”
  • Deborah Bach-Stante RN, MPH: Director, Office of Nursing Policy
  • Marci Welker RNC, MSN, FNP: “The Cutting Edge of Pain Management.”
  • Marion Long RN, MSN, AHN-BC: “Holistic Pain Management.”

“Kirtland’s annual nursing conference provides an opportunity for LPNs and RNs to participate in informative presentations on a wide variety of topics as they relate to patient wellness,” said Beth Hubbard, Kirtland’s Director of Nursing. “Nursing professionals will also have the opportunity to network with respected local colleagues and fulfill the pain management continuing education requirement required for license renewal in Michigan.”

Attendees who are practicing nursing professionals will be eligible to receive 6.0 contact hours for nurses in accordance with the Michigan State BON-General Rules Part 6-CE R.338. 10602, Rule 2(g) This includes 1.0 contact hour the newest information on the cutting edge of pain management which will fulfill the Michigan requirement for license renewal. Participants must attend the entire conference to receive a continuing education certificate.

The cost of attending the conference is $20 for undergraduate nursing students, $60 for LPN/RN certification prior to 4/25/2014 and $65 for LPN/RN certification after 4/25/2014. Registration will be accepted up to the date of the conference; however, refunds and cancellations will not be accepted after April 25, 2014.

In addition to the informational sessions, the 8th annual Nursing Conference will include a Gallery Walk and Poster Presentations highlight the talents of the Kirtland Community College graduating class of 2014. Posters developed by students address unique questions to fulfill Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Competency Definitions and KSAs.

A Silent Auction will be included, enabling attendees to purchase a wide variety of gifts or services. The auction helps to offset the cost of the conference in order to continue providing affordable, accessible and educational learning opportunities for Michigan’s nursing professionals.
