ROSCOMMON – Students, fans and supporters of Kirtland Community College may now view valuable information about campus events and important dates – and much, much more – online anywhere they go, if they have a “smart” cell phone or other mobile device with a web browser.
The Kirtland Marketing Department on Friday, Feb. 11, went live with the college’s new mobile website, Kirtlandmobile Web, which can be found online at www.kirtland.mobi. The site was created by college webmaster, Marj Esch.
“Today, people just don’t access information from a desktop computer or even a laptop,” said Jim Enger, director of marketing at Kirtland. “It’s hard to believe, but even computers are becoming ‘old school.’ That’s why we have created this mobile website, so those who need to know more about Kirtland can access that information wherever they are.”
According to Esch, Kirtlandmobile Web contains much of the same content found on the college’s main website, www.kirtland.edu. But, she said, the format is tailored to work and display effectively on smart phones and other mobile devices, such as the iPad.
“Kirtlandmobile Web provides access to campus information, resources and services – optimized and delivered to a person’s smart phone or mobile device,” Esch said. “All it takes is a smart phone or mobile device that has a web browser and either a wireless (WiFi) connection or a data plan.”
There is no charge to for users to access the mobile website, but extra charges may apply depending on the service plans of individual users.
“If you have a smart phone or web-friendly mobile device, we’re hoping you’ll take a few minutes and give Kirtlandmobile Web a try,” Esch added. “The content currently in the mobile website is a work in progress and will continue to be added to and tweaked.”
While more content will be added in the near future, www.kirtland.mobi already contains content on topics including: why someone may want to attend Kirtland; urgent announcements, such as class cancellations; news headlines; events pulled from five different campus calendars; academic information; phone and e-mail directories; campus information; details on Kirtland athletics; Google map directions to Kirtland; and links to the college’s social networking sites.
Annually, about 3,200 students attend a variety of certificate and two-year degree programs at Kirtland’s four locations – the main campus near Roscommon and the Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC) in Gaylord, as well as sites in Grayling and West Branch – with the college’s service area including all or parts of Crawford, Oscoda, Ogemaw, Roscommon, Otsego, Kalkaska, Missaukee, Gladwin and Alcona counties, and the surrounding areas.
