ROSCOMMON – The Kirtland Ms. Club is celebrating “National Poetry Month” in April, as well as helping with the fight against poverty, by hosting the first-ever “Open-Mic and Poetry Slam for Poverty” from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, at the Grayling Country Club in Grayling.
Amateur poets and comedians will be participating by displaying their talents at the fund-raising event, which is open to the public. Tickets are $5 if purchased in advance or $7 at the door.
“Those attending will get their fill of enjoyment and laughs,” said Amy Inzina, an AmeriCorps VISTA member at Kirtland Community College. “The audience is in for a special treat. All of the performers are local talent, including Kirtland and Houghton Lake High School students.”
Prizes will be awarded to the top high school and college students for the poetry slam and comedian categories, as well as a grand prize for the overall winner. Contestants will be judged by the audience and a three-member panel.
All proceeds will benefit the Kirtland Ms. Club, a non-profit group formed in 1974 which seeks to help students attending Kirtland by providing no-interest emergency loans and scholarship opportunities, as well as special grants for educational or career-related expenses.
“Everyone should be a winner here,” said Jo Ann Gave, Kirtland Ms. Club vice president. “The participants get to display their talents and compete for prizes, the audience gets a great night of entertainment and the funds raised will go help Kirtland students in need.”
Annually, about 3,200 students attend a variety of certificate and two-year degree programs at Kirtland’s four locations – the main campus near Roscommon and the Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC) in Gaylord, as well as sites in Grayling and West Branch – with the college’s service area including all or parts of Crawford, Oscoda, Ogemaw, Roscommon, Otsego, Kalkaska, Missaukee, Gladwin and Alcona counties, and the surrounding areas.
