Kirtland Community College’s Art Department will host its annual Winter Semester Student Art Exhibit/Reception from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 26 at the Art Building on the main campus near Roscommon. Collectively, the works of more than 300 art students from classes including animation, ceramics, computer generated images, drawing, design, illustration, photography, sculpture, painting, digital communications, studio graphics and portfolio will be featured. In addition, local residents are encouraged to watch coverage of Kirtland’s Student Art exhibit featured on TV 9&10 and Fox 33’s Michigan This Morning segments between 6-9 a.m. on Thursday, April 26 with reporter/journalist Alex Jokich.
Kirtland’s Art Department has a strong history of preparing its students to transfer to prestigious art institutions such as Detroit’s College for Creative Studies (CCS) and Grand Rapid’s Kendall College of Art and Design to continue their education. In the past 10 year, guidance from art instructors Scott Rice and Joe Donna has helped Kirtland students to receive more than $850,000 in scholarships to these two schools. At a student exhibition on May 1-5, Kirtland will celebrate the works of former students, 10 of whom will be graduating from Kendall on Saturday, May 4 with Bachelors of Fine Arts in various majors. From Kirtland’s Class of 2012, scholarships awards to current art students include:
- Christina Hall: $33,000/CCS and $12,000/Kendall
- Dakota Main: $22,500/Kendall
- Alyssa Prentice: $24,000/Kendall
- Lisa Talarczyk: $12,000/Kendall
- Julie Wojewski: $6,000/Kendall
In addition to inspiring students to pursue a career in the arts, Kirtland instructors continually seek professional growth as well. In January, instructor Scott Rice earned Honorable Mention, and instructor and former Kirtland student Justin LaDoux earned the People’s Choice Award at the Dennos Museum’s Northwest Regional Juried Art Exhibition. On Saturday, April 14, instructors Scott Rice, Lisa Balbach and Justin LaDoux, along with several Kirtland art students, will be displaying their work and giving demonstrations between 5-9 p.m. at West Branch’s Annual Spring Art and Wine Walk.
Currently, the newest works from art instructors Joe Donna and Scott Rice are on display at the Kirtland House located on the main campus. A reception for these artists will be held on Thursday, April 19th from 2-4 p.m. at the Kirtland House. This reception is open to the public and community members, students and staff members are encouraged to take this opportunity to view the works on display and personally visit with the artists.
