Kirtland men’s team takes 2 wins over Canadians

ROSCOMMON – The Kirtland men’s basketball team came away with two wins over some nearby Canadian teams after participating in the Can-Am Tournament at Alpena Community College on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3. They first earned an 88-74 win over Sault College on Friday, then followed it up with a decisive, 111-60, victory over Algoma University College. Both teams are located in Sault St. Marie, Ontario.

“We’re starting to really, really become a team,” said Firebirds head coach Glen Donahue on the way back to Roscommon on Saturday. The wins bring the men’s team to 3-4 for the season.

Highlights of Friday’s game against Sault College included double-digit scoring by Sal Kabara (a freshman from the Central African Republic) with 19 points, Juandrell Lewis (sophomore, Detroit) with 16, Demarvelous Carter (sophomore, Romulus) with 14, and TJ Webber (freshman, Warren) with 10.

Tony Brown (freshman, Battle Creek) added 8 assists and Ryan Filipiak (sophomore, Lapeer) 3 steals.

Against Algoma, it was a score-fest with six Firebirds in double digits, led by Brown with 22, Kabara with 17, Carter with 15, Matt Tompkins (freshman, Fairview) with 12, Darrin Wilson (freshman, Whittemore) with 11, and Dave Allison (sophomore, Lapeer) with 10.

Tompkins also came away from the boards with 11 rebounds and Filipiak 10. Kabara added 5 steals and Brown 10 assists.

In the immediate future, Kirtland’s men’s team continues to play on the road by participating in the Midwest JUCO Tournament in Kankakee, Ill., Dec. 9-11. Plan to be in Roscommon Dec. 16-17, however, when the Firebirds host their own Great North Tournament at the CRAF Center. The schedule is as follows:

Friday – 2 p.m., KCC women vs. Sinclair Community College (Ohio)

Friday – 4 p.m., Lewis College of Business vs. Kellogg Community College

Friday – 6 p.m., Genesee Community College (N.Y.) vs. Lakeland Community College (Ohio)

Friday – 8 p.m., KCC men vs. Lakeland CC

Saturday – noon, women’s consolation game

Saturday – 2 p.m., men’s consolation game

Saturday – 4 p.m., women’s championship game

Saturday – 6 p.m., men’s championship game
