ROSCOMMON – Kirtland Community College’s women’s basketball team would like to encourage everyone to donate their used books and/or textbooks in order to help break the cycle of illiteracy around the world.
During the week of Dec. 12-15, books can be dropped off in designated boxes on the Kirtland campus, and they’ll be donated to the Room to Read program which works to improve educational opportunities for children in developing countries.
Since its inception in 2000, Room to Read has built and stocked 117 schools, 2,000 multi-lingual libraries, and 48 computer and language labs throughout Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and India. They are currently providing long-term scholarships to over 1,200 young women who would have otherwise been neglected in favor of educating a male child. In addition, they partner with international and local publishing companies to publish children’s books in local languages.
Books from the Kirtland book drive will be donated to Room to Read which will sell the books online. One hundred percent of the profits after cost will go toward scholarships and new libraries in SE Asia.
The donation of 500 books provides nearly 500 new children’s books published in local language. The donation of 2,500 books can fund a full K-12 scholarship for a young girl to attend school. The donation of 5,000 books can provide one-half of the funding necessary to build a new school in partnership with a community.
Help Kirtland in the fight against illiteracy. Call Teresa Stuck at 989-275-5000, ext. 385, with questions or for more information. To find out more about Room to Read, log on at www.roomtoread.org.
