Kirtland Firebirds lose on road to Wayne CCC

ROSCOMMON – Despite another 25-point game from the Firebirds’ steady shooting guard Juandrell Lewis, the Wildcats of Wayne County Community College bested the Kirtland men’s basketball team on Monday, Jan. 9, with a final score of 98-66.

Playing in Detroit, the road loss dropped the Firebirds’ overall record to 7-8 (2-1 MCCAA).

“We didn’t play well on offense or defense,” said Kirtland head coach Glen Donahue. “But we did draw 17 turnovers from them, so we did some things well. It’s back to practice.”

Lewis, a 6’2” sophomore from Detroit, also grabbed 8 rebounds and offered 4 assists for the Firebirds. Sal Kabara (freshman, Central African Republic) was also in double digits, adding 14 points and 8 rebounds. David Allison (sophomore, Lapeer) contributed 9 points, along with 4 assists and 5 steals.

Rounding out Kirtland’s score were Demarvelous Carter (sophomore, Flint) with 6 points, Tony Brown (freshman, Battle Creek) with 5, Matt Tompkins (freshman, Fairview) with 5, and Brian Suchowesky (freshman, Houghton Lake) with 2.

Sports fans have plenty of opportunity to watch the Firebirds in action this month. After hosting Mott Community College on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at the CRAF Center in Roscommon, they play three successive Saturday home games, Jan. 14, 21 and 28, taking on St. Clair County CC, Schoolcraft CC and Henry Ford CC. The men’s games begin at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
