Kirtland Firebirds sustain 80-64 loss to Mott Bears

ROSCOMMON – The Kirtland Firebirds posed a constant threat and even took the lead several times during their Wednesday, Jan. 11 contest against the Mott Community College Bears, but the Bears drew from a deep bench and handed the Firebirds an 80-64 loss on their home court.

The loss dropped the Firebirds to 7-9 overall, while boosting the Bears to 11-5. Mott CC remains on top of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association’s Eastern Conference with a 3-0 record.

Tony Brown, the Firebirds’ 6’1” freshman guard from Battle Creek, scored a team-high 15 points, followed by 13 each from Juandrell Lewis (sophomore, Detroit) and David Allison (sophomore, Lapeer). Demarvelous Carter (sophomore, Flint) added 9 points, Ryan Filipiak 8 points, and Brian Suchowesky (freshman, Houghton Lake) 6 points.

All 10 Mott players scored, including Terrance Watson (freshman, Detroit) and Keith Flourney (freshman, Detroit) who added 13 each to the Bears’ score.

The Firebirds remain at home this weekend to host St. Clair County CC on Saturday, Jan. 14 at the CRAF Center in Roscommon. The men’s game begins at 3 p.m. They’ll then take to the road for a Wednesday, Jan. 18 game against Delta College before returning home for another Saturday, 3 p.m. contest against Schoolcraft College on Jan. 21.
