ROSCOMMON – A whopping seven Kirtland Firebirds scored in the double digits in the men’s basketball defeat of the Alpena Lumberjacks in Alpena on Wednesday, Jan. 25. Kirtland’s 101-82 win improved the Firebirds’ record to 9-11, while Alpena dropped to 5-10 in the MCCAA.
Brian Suchowesky, a 6’4” freshman from Houghton Lake, had one of his best games to date, netting 17 points for the Firebirds and adding 6 rebounds. Sal Kabara, a 6’6” freshman from the Central African Republic, also landed 17 points.
Other Firebirds in double digits were David Allison (sophomore, Lapeer) with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 6 steals; Darrin Wilson (freshman, Prescott) with 15 points and 9 rebounds; Tony Brown (freshman, Battle Creek) with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 12 assists; DeMarvelous Carter (sophomore, Flint) with 10 points and 4 rebounds; and Matt Tompkins (freshman, Fairview) with 10 points.
The men’s team will give basketball fans a treat this weekend with a double header. The Firebirds host Henry Ford Community College for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 28, then host Kankakee Community College (Ill.) on Sunday, Jan. 29, for a 7 p.m. game. Kankakee was the champion of the 2005 Midwest JUCO Tournament, which Kirtland won in 2004.
Firebirds home games are free and are played at the CRAF Center in downtown Roscommon.
