ROSCOMMON – With everyone contributing significant time and the application of a half-court press that thwarted their opponents, the Kirtland Lady Firebirds netted a satisfying 79-62 win over the Alpena Lady Lumberjacks on Wednesday, Jan. 25, in Alpena.
Emily Henion, Kirtland’s live-wire freshman guard from Frederic, knotted a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists. She also added a team-high 7 rebounds and 3 steals.
The Firebirds’ Lizz Stempki (freshman, St. Ignace) continued to lead the team in scoring with 22 points on 11 of 18 from the field to go along with 6 boards. Chelsey Willilams (freshman, Houghton Lake) rounded out the double digits with 13 points and 7 rebounds.
Rena Barnett (freshman, LeRoy) had 7 points, 3 boards, 3 assists and 4 steals, while Natalie Foster (freshman, Houghton Lake) added 6 points and 5 boards.
When they managed to get around the Firebirds’ press, the Lumberjacks shot well, with Whitney Meeder (Posen) leading Alpena’s scoring with 25 points.
The win brought the Lady Firebirds’ record to 10-12 overall, while the Lady Lumberjacks dropped to 3-11.
Catch the Lady Firebirds next on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m. when they play host to Henry Ford Community College at the CRAF Center in Roscommon. They continue to play at home when they host Oakland Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 5:30 p.m., also at the CRAF Center. Admission is free.
