ROSCOMMON – Both Sal Kabara and Tony Brown dropped in 30 points to lead the Kirtland Firebirds to a 97-82 win over the Raiders of Oakland County Community College at the CRAF Center on Wednesday, Feb. 1.
Despite the win, Kirtland head coach Glen Donahue wasn’t satisfied with his team.
“This was our worst game of the season,” Donahue said. “We made only 18 of 34 free throw attempts and after the first 12-15 minutes we lost total concentration. We must certainly get it back for our game on Saturday,” he said, referring to Kirtland’s scheduled matchup with Mott Community College in Flint on Saturday, Feb. 4.
Mott’s conference record is 8-0 (17-5 overall) and, at this time, they are the undisputed leader of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association’s Eastern Conference, to which Kirtland belongs.
Kirtland will go into Saturday’s game with a 6-4 conference record (11-12 overall).
Against Oakland, Kabara, a freshman from the Central African Republic, and Brown, a freshman from Battle Creek, also did well on defense, with Kabara snatching 6 rebounds and 6 steals, to go with Brown’s 8 steals.
David Allison (sophomore, Lapeer) added 17 points and 3 assists for the Firebirds. Brian Suchowesky (freshman, Houghton Lake) added 6 points and 9 rebounds, while DeMarvelous Carter (sophomore, Flint) added 4 points and 12 rebounds.
Rounding out Kirtland’s score were Matt Tompkins (freshman, Fairview) with 6 points and 3 assists, and Darrin Wilson (freshman, Prescott) and Ryan Filipiak (sophomore, Lapeer), each with 2 points.
Game time in Flint on Saturday is 3 p.m., preceded by the Lady Firebirds’ game at 1 p.m. The Firebirds remain on the road for a Wednesday, Feb. 8 game in Port Huron against St. Clair County Community College, then play at the Houghton Lake High School gym on Saturday, Feb. 11, when they host Delta College.
