ROSCOMMON – The game hung in the balance until the final seconds, with Kirtland behind by 2 points. And with no luck on their side, that’s how it remained at the buzzer, with the Lady Firebirds falling 60-58 to the Oakland Community College Raiders before a home crowd at the CRAF Center on Wednesday, Feb. 1.
Freshman Lizz Stempki, of St. Ignace, led Kirtland in the score column with 18 points, but shot a disappointing 6-for-13 from the free throw line. She was followed by Rena Barnett (freshman, LeRoy) and Emily Henion (freshman, Frederic), both with 13 points.
Rounding out the scoring were Chelsey Williams (fr, Houghton Lake) with 5 points; Onica Jones, (fr, Rochester, N.Y.) with 4; Natalie Foster (fr, Houghton Lake) with 3; and Emilee Bruner (so, Mio) with 2.
The loss dropped the Lady Firebirds to 11-13 for the season (4-6 in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association).
Kirtland will take to the road for its next two contests which take place Saturday, Feb. 4, in Flint against Mott Community College, and Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Port Huron when the Lady Firebirds take on St. Clair County CC. They’re home again on Saturday, Feb. 11, but play at the Houghton Lake High School gym, against Delta College. Game time in Houghton Lake is 1 p.m.
