Kirtland’s hopes nixed by Mott scoring drive

ROSCOMMON – Kirtland’s Sal Kabara knocked in 21 points and took down 10 rebounds in an all-out effort to get the edge on conference-leading Mott Community College on Saturday, Feb. 4, in Flint. But it was to no avail as Mott hung onto its perfect conference record, defeating the Kirtland Firebirds with a score of 106-66.

Down by only 7 points with nine and one-half minutes left in the game, Kirtland came close to finding that edge, but Mott’s late-game scoring drive effectively dulled their prospects.

The win pushed Mott to 8-0 in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association’s Eastern Conference (18-5 overall). Kirtland falls to 11-13 overall (6-5 MCCAA). The loss also broke Kirtland’s recent three-game conference winning streak.

David Allison contributed 13 points and 4 rebounds for Kirtland, while Ryan Filipiak added 11 points.

Kirtland is on the road to Port Huron on Wednesday, Feb. 8, to take on St. Clair County CC. On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Firebirds play at the Houghton Lake High School gymnasium where they’ll host Delta College. Game time is 3 p.m. for the men and 1 p.m. for the Lady Firebirds.
