Kirtland drops game to third-place St. Clair

ROSCOMMON – Kirtland’s Sal Kabara netted 31 points and 16 rebounds, but failed to put his Firebirds over the rim on Wednesday, Feb. 8 in Port Huron where they fell to defeat at the hands of St. Clair County Community College with a score of 108-101.

The teams went into the half with Kirtland up, 55-50. But St. Clair, currently third in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association with a record of 5-3 (5-10 overall), came through in the end. The loss dropped Kirtland to an 11-14 overall record.

Tony Brown, a Kirtland freshman from Battle Creek, had 24 points and 11 assists in the game – stats that are only likely to boost his already impressive positions in the scoring and assist leaders columns for the National Junior College Athletic Association. Brown is currently listed as No. 10 in the nation for assists among NJCAA Division I players, averaging just under 6.5 assists per game.

Without all their games reported, Brown and Kabara occupy the No. 23 and 24 spots on the Individual Scoring Leaders list. Both are averaging just under 20 points per game.

David Allison added 17 points and 6 rebounds in the game against St. Clair, while Demarvelous Carter had 11 points and 5 rebounds.

Catch the Firebirds live when they host Delta College (2-8 MCCAA, 4-15 overall) on Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Houghton Lake High School. They take to the road Wednesday, Feb. 15, to take on Schoolcraft College in Livonia (7-2, 21-4), then return to the CRAF Center on Saturday, Feb. 18, to play Alpena CC for their last home game of the season. Saturday game times are 1 p.m. for the Lady Firebirds and 3 p.m. for the men’s games.
