ROSCOMMON – Six Firebirds were in double digits and the score was 109-99, in favor of Kirtland, when the final buzzer rang on the Kirtland men’s basketball team’s last game of the regular season, an overtime defeat of Lewis College of Business, Detroit.
The game took place Saturday, Feb, 25, at the legendary St. Cecilia’s gym in Detroit, and leaves the Firebirds with only post-season play in the NJCAA on their docket. First-round play is set for Monday, March 6, with Kirtland taking on Vincennes University in Vincennes, Ind., at 8 p.m. CST.
Tony Brown, a freshman from Battle Creek, led the team with 24 points and offered 6 assists for Kirtland. David Allison (sophomore, Lapeer) scored 19. Matt Tompkins (freshman, Fairview) and TJ Webber (freshman, Warren) each added 16 points, while DeMarvelous Carter (sophomore, Flint) and Sal Kabara (freshman, Central African Republic), each contributed 15 points.
Lewis’s Kendal Norfleet scored 44 points for the opposition.
While in Detroit, Kirtland head coach Glen Donahue took the opportunity to drop in on the Methodist Children’s Village where his players reportedly had a great time answering questions and offering their own brand of advice and humor to the young residents.
