Firebirds Prepare for Oppy Tournment

With the 2012-13 basketball season underway, the Firebirds are preparing for the annual Oppy Tournament hosted at the MAC Athletic Complex in Mio on November 23 and 24.  The tournament is held each year on Thanksgiving weekend and is established in memory of Kirtland counselor, music instructor and athletic director Steve Oppy, who passed away in March, 2008.

The schedule for the 2012 Oppy Tournment is as follows:

Women’s Basketball:

11/23/2012 at MIO Rochester vs. Olivet (1 p.m.)

11/23/2012 at MIO Kirtland vs. Alma (3 p.m.)

11/24/2012 at MIO Losers from 11/23 games will play each other (1 p.m.)

Men’s Basketball:

11/23/2012 at MIO Oppy vs. Detroit JC (7 p.m.)

11/24/2012 at MIO vs. Rochester or Olivet (5 or 7 p.m.)

Various shooting contests will be held throughout the tournament with prizes including Kirtland Community College athletic apparel and cash gift cards, with a grand prize of a $100 gift card.

In action on November 15, the Lady ‘Birds put forth an impressive effort with a solid 77-30 victory over Northwood’s JV team.  Serbia’s Sladaha Radulovic put 26 points on the board, followed by 15 from Melissa Hansen and 13 from Tasha Crouse.

The men’s team was edged out by Northwood in a hard-fought battle on the court by a final score of 74-71.  Jude Gouveia led scoring with 24 points, followed by Leroy Jackson, Alistair Cole and Gavar Long contributing 11 points each.
