Your safety at KCC is more important than ever in this sometimes-crazy world. The tragic massacre at Virginia Tech was a catalyst for the Federal Cleary Act and as a result, Kirtland now has a broadcast alert system and up-to-date training to deal with an unlikely emergency of that magnitude.
As remote as the possibility may seem, should anything dangerous happen on campus, Kirtland’s Public Safety officers will make every attempt to keep you safe.
You’re more likely to need them when you have:
- locked your keys in your vehicle
- filed a personal protection order against someone and need an escort
- lost something of value
- need a jump
You are at Kirtland to learn or work. Public Safety officers are ready to help you when unpredictable events get in your way.

Campus Safety
Kirtland Community College is a very safe campus but it is still a public place. The Public Safety Department wishes to maintain a high level of security on campus so we offer the following safety tips to help reduce your possibility of falling victim to crime.
Be alert – your safety depends mostly on your attitude and actions. Practice common sense and avoid putting yourself in a situation likely to make you a victim of crime.
Report suspicious activity – be watchful of any suspicious activity and report these to the Public Safety Department (extension 355 on Roscommon campus or 911 on the Gaylord campus) as soon as possible.
Use the buddy system – there is safety in numbers and at all times you should walk with someone, especially after dark.
Stay in well lit areas – in the evening walk along illuminated pathways and park in lighted parking lots.
Keep valuables at home – avoid bringing unnecessary valuables on campus, and do not leave electronic equipment, purses, cash, checks or books unattended.
Lock your doors – take the time to lock your vehicle doors to prevent theft in the parking lots.
Call for an escort - if you feel uneasy about any situation, feel free to contact extension 355 (Roscommon campus) and Public Safety personnel will escort you to your vehicle.
Kirtland Public Safety officers patrol the campus buildings, sidewalks and patrol the roadways and parking lots in marked patrol vehicles. Highly visible patrol vehicles and uniformed police officers deter most criminals, but not all. We rely on the informed public that is interested in becoming involved to deter crime. With your help, we can continue to make Kirtland Community College one of the safest community colleges.
Daily Safety Log
In compliance with the Cleary Act, Kirtland Public Safety Department maintains a daily crime log detailing the activity on Kirtland grounds and adjacent areas.
If you are interested in viewing this document, please contact Public Safety at 989 275-5000 extension 355 or stop into the Criminal Justice office in the lower level of the Administration building at the Roscommon campus during business hours.

Parking and Traffic Safety on Campus
Through enforcement of parking and traffic policies, it is Kirtland's desire to provide a safe means for entry and departure from campus lots. It is also hoped that fire, safety, and maintenance vehicle access lanes, handicap spaces, and loading, unloading opportunities can be provided with the least amount of inconvenience.
Parking on campus is free and allowed in approved areas only. Parking is not allowed in fire lanes, on or beside walking paths, on grass, or next to buildings. In addition, parking in the lot adjacent to the Career Technology Center is reserved for patrons of automotive and cosmetology services. Students should park in designated areas only. A Vehicle Identification sticker is required. Students should call 989-275-5000 ext 348, for more information.
Parking spaces for service vehicles and the handicapped are posted. A permanent or temporary handicapped sticker from the Secretary of State's office is needed to park in the handicapped areas.
Parking and traffic violators on campus will be ticketed by Kirtland's Public Safety Officers. The following fines are imposed on violators:
$40.00 Parked in handicap space
$25.00 Blocking emergency exit, parking in fire lane, parking within 15 feet of fire hydrant
$10.00 All other parking violations
Place sticker inside front window on passenger side, lower corner.
