Single Sign-On Comes to Kirtland

This Week @ Kirtland!

In our ongoing effort to provide innovative and cutting-edge technology to enhance student learning, Kirtland has recently transitioned to a Single Sign-On (SSO) login system.  So, what’s the big deal?  “The big idea is to simplify things for students,” said Tim Scherer, director of institutional services.  “Now everyone will only have one user name and password combo to remember.”

Hhmmm…still not so sure why SSO matters?  The benefit of Single Sign-On (SSO) is that once you log in, you do not need to log in again for certain web applications.  This also means that Kirtland is working toward a way in which staff and students will have individual access to all your information with less hassle.

Think about everything you do as a student here at Kirtland:

  • SparkyEmail
  • myKirtland
  • Canvas
  • RAVE emergency alert system

According to Stefan Holodnick, online services developer, SSO will ultimately be expanded to include other helpful college resources including:

  • NetPartner (Financial Aid)
  • Evergreen (Library Catalog)
  • Library Databases
  • MoodleTools (Library Works-Cited Software)

Bigger than just SSO, Stefan is implementing a “Top 25” list of online services.  The creation and addition of these services is possible thanks to funding from a federal Title III grant that provides $2 million dollars over five years.  In addition to creating services to enhance student services, the grant funds will be used to improve classroom technology, creating online courses and degrees, and more.  Other “Top 25” projects completed as a result of this T-III funding including the online OARs (orientation, advising and registration sessions) and the RAVE alert system which notifies us of class cancellations, emergency alerts, weather closures, etc., via email, text and phone calls to home and cell phones.

Your future – it’s closer than you think.  And so is Kirtland Community College.  Our main campus in Roscommon, extension sites in Gaylord and West Branch, and our large selection of online courses and degrees are all designed to help you realize your educational and career goals.  We integrate the latest technologies with active learning strategies, collaboration and problem solving to unlock your career potential.
