Kirtland Community College’s Surgical Technology program was recently awarded national accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Accreditation looks at the quality of the educational program to make sure students are receiving the best education possible in a particular health care field. Kirtland’s Surgical Technology program successfully met the standards set forth by CAAHEP following an 18-month accreditation process. This provides assurance that the program has been reviewed by an outside source and is in compliance with the nationally recognized Standards for the profession.
“Kirtland’s program is filling a great need in northern Michigan for more surgical technologists at our area hospitals,” said Nicole Claussen, Program Director of Surgical Technology at Kirtland. “Our future students can be assured our program is meeting high standards that include quality of faculty, clinical sites offered, equipment and supplies available, and following a curriculum that matches the industry standard.”
The program can be completed in 18 months and includes placement at one of 10 different health facilities in northern Michigan. During its 5-year history, Surgical Technology graduates achieved 100 percent pass rates on the surgery certification exam and 100 percent job placement rates.
“We have an extremely experienced program director for our Surgical Technology program,” said Laura Percival, Dean of Occupational Programs. “Nicole Claussen, MS, CST, FAST has over 15 years of experience teaching surgical technology.
“Claussen is nationally recognized as one of the top 15 Surgical Technology Professors by Medical Technology Schools.com. In addition, she was awarded Fellow of the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) in 2012, and has most recently served as an elected board member of AST.”
CAAHEP is the largest programmatic accreditor in the health sciences field and reviews and accredits over 2000 educational programs in 28 health science occupations.
