Kirtland. Up and Moving.

At Kirtland, we’re in the business of changing lives and this starts with our highly trained, knowledgeable faculty and staff committed to unlocking potential and preparing students for their future.  Clearly, we’re all about education and opportunity, but This Week @ Kirtland, we’re all about WELLNESS too!

Kirtland is getting fit on new and improved fitness trails

With all of the information in the news and on the internet, it’s hard not to know the importance of being fit and healthy.  It’s a national trend to become more educated on the wonders of wellness, and Kirtland is paying attention – we even have a Wellness Committee that initiates a variety of programs all year long to encourage employees to get up and get moving!  This summer, Kirtland has reinvigorated its Fitness Trail and employees are taking weekly trail walks through mid-August.

Kirtland’s Fitness Trail has been around for approximately 25 years, give or take a couple.  Through grants from the Kirtland Foundation and the Audubon Society, workers from the Michigan Youth Corps installed various fitness activities on trails created to weave throughout Roscommon’s main campus.  Instructor Tom Dale added information placards and people were off and running…or at least walking!

In more recent years, the trails started to suffer as a result of fallen trees, limbs, general overgrowth and wet areas.  A big Kirtland THANK YOU to everyone who asked what we need to do to get the trails back into usable condition, and especially to employees Ron Sharpe, Dan McWilliams and Kurt Kiessel for making it happen.  Trail clean-up, bridge repair and a good mowing brought Kirtland’s Fitness Trails back to the present!  Final touches including some new signage and some yellow paint striping at locations where the trail crosses our roads will be the icing on the cake (which isn’t very wellnessy, but hey! It’s OK because we’re walking to get fit so we can have our cake AND eat it too!).

Our interest in employee wellness spreads to other locations as well, just ask the crew up at Kirtland’s Gaylord M-TEC.  While they don’t have a fitness trail, they do have easy access to a true local treasure in the community — Gaylord’s Community Garden (or officially, the Otsego County Alternative Landscaping Demonstration Garden and Conservation Forest).  At any rate, it’s great to have so many of our Kirtland employees outside and enjoying these beautiful summer days and getting fit.

So, Kirtland is up and moving!  If you’d like to join a fitness walk, come out and join us on Wednesdays from now through August 13th.  We start at 11:30 and meet in parking lot G by the Art Department.  Or, bring your family and friends out on a weekend and enjoy a beautiful trip around the scenic Kirtland campus.  You won’t regret it and you’ll see some amazing things along the way!
