Student veterans and their dependents can now choose from more than 50 veteran-friendly schools committed to providing on-campus, veteran-centric services to better support their academic and transitional needs, including Kirtland Community College.
The Veteran-Friendly School program, created by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, recognizes institutions of higher learning for their dedication to student veterans and dependents utilizing their G.I. Bill and other educational benefits. Kirtland received silver-level status, which is determined by the number of services available to student veterans and also participates in the Michigan Veteran Education Initiative.
At Kirtland, Veteran Resource Representative Chris Stanton connects student veterans with available benefits, state and local resources and one-on-one support. “My goal is to make Kirtland a more veteran-friendly campus,” said Stanton. “I want to be instrumental in establishing a Veterans Resource Center at Kirtland where vets can access computers, do homework, get assistance with required paper work and get their questions answered — place to hang out.”
“Whether schools offer an active student veterans club, on-campus support staff, accelerated learning programs for military experience or all of the above and more, veterans attending veteran-friendly institutions have a variety of services and resources available to them as they begin the next chapter of their lives, MVAA Director Jeff Barnes said.”
“The [veteran-friendly] rankings make it simple for veterans and their dependents to identify schools throughout Michigan that are committed to supporting them and helping them succeed,” Barnes said. “Through the Veteran-Friendly School program, veterans will know exactly what services are available to them when they walk onto campus, so they never have to feel alone.”
Student veterans or dependents with questions about GI Bill or other federal benefits, or wanting to learn more about Kirtland’s veteran-friendly services, programs, advising, testing, financial aid and other services, should contact Chris Stanton, Veteran Resource Representative, at 989-275-5000, ext. 407 or email@example.com.
