The impact college life will have on your children surely is part of your decision making process before you register. They’ll watch you manage family, class time and homework at the same time. Why not include them while you’re on campus?

The Warbler's Nest (Kirtland Early Childhood Learning Center) is state-licensed and the care-givers include licensed professionals who are supported by KCC students in the nursing and education programs.

They are able to care for infants, have a pre-school program and include education in nearly everything they do (gotta have a little pure fun). Activities include daily doses of:

  • Science
  • Music
  • Physical activity
  • Arts & Crafts

They spend part of one day every week in the Kirtland library and twice each week they hit the campus fitness trail that weaves through the woods. They even go sledding in the winter and only stay indoors if the wind-chill factor is below 18 degrees.

Free trips to Kirtland’s theatre productions are available to you and your children several times every year. If you’d like to go alone to a KCC Saturday show, the center is open and available at its same hourly rate.

You can visit the center between classes and even for lunch or snack time, all of which are customized to fit each child’s schedule, not the center’s. Meals and snacks are prepared right in the center! If you are a breastfeeding mom, you can use the private area made just for you and your baby. And if all this is not enough, you’ll be close in the event your child becomes ill.

Lots of Kirtland students say they could not attend college if it weren’t for the Children’s Learning Center. Make your family life a little easier while you’re a student and enroll your kids today!

Fast Facts on the NEW Warbler's Nest Facility

At its May 20 meeting, the Kirtland Community College Board of Trustees unanimously approved the construction of a new children’s learning center (CLC), The Warbler’s Nest, on the college’s main campus near Roscommon. And, just three months later, the project took another step toward becoming reality with a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday, Aug. 25.

Some facts about the new Warbler's Nest

  • The new CLC will be a 4,608-square-foot, single-story structure of “stick built” construction. Location will be on KCC’s main campus near Roscommon, across from the college’s Kirtland House conference center. It replaces the existing CLC, which is located in a converted housing unit originally built in the mid-1970s for faculty housing.
  • The building will serve as a childcare facility and early learning center, with office space to be rented to the Great Start Collaborative, and will include a state-of-the-art training facility for area daycare providers.
  • The facility will have 12 separate areas/rooms, including a lobby and reception area, restrooms, two offices, a staff break room and student motor skills classroom, kitchen and pantry, three separate childcare areas, an infant area, toddler area and pre-kindergarten area, as well as an observation room. Capacity of the building is 59 persons.
  • Cost of the new building is budgeted at $625,000. Bonding to finance the project will be through Chase Bank, as well as a $50,000 U.S.D.A. Community Facilities grant.
  • The anticipated construction schedule for the CLC includes the Aug. 25, 2010, groundbreaking ceremony, with the actual construction starting on Aug. 30, 2010. The project is scheduled to be completed by Jan. 30, 2011, and will open shortly afterwards.
  • The new CLC, once opened, will be open to children of students, employees and local communities.
  • Unlike the previous CLC, the new facility will be managed and operated by the college. A center director will be hired as a Kirtland employee to oversee operations.
  • The KCC Board of Trustees authorized the hiring of Integrity Construction Services of Gaylord to serve as the construction manager for the project. The company will be overseeing all aspects of the construction project. Bids for subcontractors, as recommended to the board by the construction manager, were approved at the Aug. 19 board meeting held in Grayling.
