Kirtland Community College will host an open house from 5-7 p.m. on September 20 to celebrate the renovation and grand opening of the college’s new extension site location in West Branch. The event is open to the public and includes tours and demonstrations, refreshments and a raffle of prizes including a laptop, a tablet, a $300 Kirtland Community College gift certificate, tickets to a performance at the Kirtland Center for the Performing Arts and more. A formal ribbon cutting ceremony is planned at 6 p.m.
Kirtland’s West Branch extension site is home to the college’s flagship Surgical Technology program, which has a 100% job placement rate following its first three years in existence. “The surgical technology industry is a medically necessary, fast growing and high-pay career field,” said instructor Jose Colunga. “Advances in technology and an aging population are driving a need for people trained in Health Sciences. You can look forward to working in a field expected to grow 25 percent during the next decade.”
In addition to the Surgical Technology program, the West Branch extension site now offers a wider range of general education courses including accounting, business, English, history, government and math. “Kirtland is committed to bringing a larger availability of classes to a region that needs better access to educational opportunities,” said Dr. Thomas Quinn, president of Kirtland Community College. “These general ed courses allow current and future Kirtland students to pursue a college degree in order to secure better employment or transfer to a four year college for additional study. Our goal is to provide higher education designed to meet the changing needs of business and industry while preparing students for career and personal success.”
Kirtland’s West Branch extension site is located at 2479 South M-76 between the I-75 Business Loop and M-55. The site renovation began in early May and completed in mid-August. Courses are no longer offered at the former location on M-33 near Ogemaw Heights High School.
Kirtland provides open access to education and cultural opportunities to enrich the lives of the people in northern Michigan. The faculty and staff seek to offer higher education in a student-focused environment, providing transfer and career technical programs; developmental studies; workforce development; personal enrichment and cultural opportunities. Annually, more than 3,000 students attend a variety of occupational, skilled trades, two-year and transfer degree programs at Kirtland’s three locations – near Roscommon, Kirtland-Gaylord and Kirtland-West Branch. Kirtland also offers a wide range of online courses and degrees, all of which can be completed from home.
