Hospital receives ‘Game Changer Award’ from Kirtland Community College
Partnership boosts Cardiac Sonography program at Kirtland
GRAYLING, Mich., Dec. 17, 2019 – Last week, Kirtland Community College presented Munson Medical Center with its “Game Changer Award” for its partnership in helping students step into cardiac sonography careers.
The college’s President Thomas Quinn presented the award to hospital President and CEO Matt Wille for the hospital’s commitment to providing internship opportunities for students over the past 10 years.
“We wanted to recognize the hospital’s contribution to the success of our students and community,” Quinn said. “Our Game Changer Award is our way of extending our gratitude and formally letting the hospital know it has been invaluable for Kirtland students. The training students receive at the college is only one aspect of their overall education, the other is the experience they receive while doing an internship in Traverse City or other Munson Healthcare facility.”
Over the past 10 years about 20 students have gone through the accredited program which involves five semesters of training, including a final semester internship.
“We are one of two or three accredited two-year associate degree adult echocardiography programs in the state of Michigan,” Quinn said.
Cardiac sonography uses ultrasound technology to help physicians diagnose issues in the heart and its chambers.
Wille said the partnership represents a win for both organizations.
“We appreciate Kirtland’s efforts to prepare these students for careers that are sometimes hard-to-recruit to more rural areas of the country,” he said. “We have several former students working here in Traverse City and really value our relationship with the college.”
