Part-time Lead Tutor, Writing Center
Writing Center tutors assist Kirtland students, faculty, staff and administration improve their writing skills by providing critical feedback, identifying areas of weakness and demonstrating how to make corrections.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Tutor students one-on-one or in group settings during set hours established each semester.
- Work the Online Writing Lab (OWL) and Virtual Writing Center services after hours in addition to established Writing Center hours.
- Maintain and administer the Plagiarism Traffic School.
- Present information to classes regarding sources for writing assistance.
- Develop materials for aiding students with writing issues.
- Apply correct use of various writing formats (e.g. MLA and APA) including style, bibliography, and in-text references/citations.
- Access and utilize library resources and other research help available through the Kirtland Library and Tutoring websites.
- Use a variety of strategies to work with a diverse population whose writing skills cover a wide range of abilities as well as foster a writer’s confidence.
- Maintain records as required by the Tutoring Center.
- Communicate with faculty regarding student progress.
- Update Tutoring website and related tutoring LibGuides.
- Act as a representative for the tutoring program within the college community.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION – Works under the general supervision of the Director of Library Services & Tutoring
ATTENDANCE – Individuals in this position are expected to be available during the normal business hours of the college, and may occasionally be asked to vary their schedule to meet department requirements. On-site attendance is typically required unless otherwise specified.
WORKING CONDITIONS – Conditions are those of a typical office environment, requiring frequent oral, written and various other forms of communication with students and colleagues, and the ability to enter data and written communications in electronic format in a timely manner.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in English or related field with experience teaching college level writing courses.
- One to three years tutorial experience as a non-student tutor, or a combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of this position
- Current or past English instructor preferred
- Proficient in the writing process, writing strategies, research strategies, and grammar and punctuation rules.
- Knowledge of computer and current office applications.
- Possess excellent interpersonal communication skills in order to appropriately articulate suggestions for writing improvement and strategies.
- Able to function independently, respect confidentiality, implement problem-solving, and maintain courtesy in dealing with students, faculty, staff, and visitors
