PRO 5.205 Part-time Classified Employee Benefits
- Each part-time regular or limited classified employee shall be eligible for paid time off (PTO) on a prorated basis. PTO can be used for personal or vacation time, when an eligible employee is unable to report to work for personal health, or family health and related needs, as may be required under Michigan and Federal Law.
-  Personal health or family health and related needs can be any of the following:
- Physical or mental illness, injury, or health condition of the employee or his or her family member.
- Medical diagnosis, care, or treatment of the employee or employee’s family member
- Preventative care of the employee or his or her family member.
- Closure of the employee’s primary workplace by order of a public official due to a public health emergency
- The care of his or her child whose school or place of care has been closed by order of a public official due to a public health emergency.
- The employee’s or his or her family member’s exposure to a communicable disease that would jeopardize the health of others as determined by health authorities or a health care provider.
- For domestic violence and sexual assault situations, employees may use paid medical leave for any of the following:
- Medical care or psychological or other counseling.
- Receiving services from a victim services organization.
- Relocation and obtaining legal services.
- Participation in civil or criminal proceedings related to or resulting from domestic violence or sexual assault.
- A family member includes a biological, adopted or foster child, stepchild or legal ward, or a child to whom the eligible employee stands in loco parentis, a biological parent, foster parent, stepparent, or adoptive parent or a legal guardian of an eligible employee or an eligible employee’s spouse or an individual who stood in loco parentis when the eligible employee was a minor child, an individual to whom the eligible employee is legally married under the laws of any state, a grandparent, a grandchild, a biological, foster, or adopted sibling.
- The accrual of PTO shall be based on 96 hours of PTO for each 2080 hours worked.
- The employee should report PTO used on his/her time sheet. He/she should claim only the amount of hours he/she was scheduled to work on the day missed or requested off, not to exceed 28 total paid hours in a given week.Â
- PTO must be scheduled in advance and approved by your supervisor, except in cases of illness or emergency as described above. If an employee takes PTO without prior approval for medical or emergency reasons, the college reserves the right to require medical or other documentation of the reasons given for the unapproved PTO.
- A maximum of 40 hours of PTO may be carried over from one benefit year to the next.Â
- A benefit year is defined as the college’s fiscal year, starting July 1 and ending on June 30 of the following calendar year.Â
- Any hours accrued beyond the maximum carryover amount will be forfeited if not used prior to June 30th.Â
- When a part-time classified employee is transferred from part-time to full-time, accumulated hours in the PTO bank will remain until the balance is exhausted or until the balance would otherwise be forfeited under normal circumstances.Â
- Accrued or available PTO is not payable upon termination of employment or transfer of position. Â
- For the 2019-2020 fiscal year only, part-time classified employees will have the equivalent of one budgeted week’s sick time transferred to their PTO bank, if available. Any hours in excess of this amount will remain in that employee’s sick bank until the balance is depleted.
