Michigan Achievement Scholarships Are Open to All Class of 2023 Graduates
Beginning Fall 2023 incoming freshman at Kirtland Community College can be eligible for additional financial aid through the new Michigan Achievement Scholarship.
“The Michigan Achievement Scholarship will provide financial support for students to help pay for a college degree. These funds enable students to obtain education they may not have access to otherwise,” said Kirtland Community College’s Director of Financial Aid Kemmoree Duncombe. “Students should talk to their parents or guardian, gather documents, and fill out their (FAFSA) as soon as possible. This could be a huge savings over the next three years as they earn their associate degree at a community college.”
Announced by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the Michigan Achievement Scholarship is a new intuitive focused around providing additional college tuition aid. Beginning with 2023 Michigan high school graduates, roughly 8 out of 10 incoming freshmen will be eligible for the scholarship and need only to complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to apply. All incoming freshman that are eligible will see their state Michigan Achievement Scholarship awarded along with all other federal student aid in the Fall 2023 semester.
“Applying and qualifying for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship will help lower the cost of college for many students in our school district,” said Duncombe.
The Michigan Achievement Scholarship awards up to $2,750, for three years, for potential students wanting to attend a community college. For new incoming students at Kirtland this would provide up to $5,500 in additional aid towards tuition. For all other students wanting to attend public or private four-year colleges and universities the Michigan Achievement Scholarship awards various amounts spanning over the course of five years.
Listed below is a summary of important information pertaining to the eligibility requirements of the Michigan Achievement Scholarship provided to date:
- Roughly 80% of Michigan high school graduates will qualify for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship
- All wanting to apply for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship must fill out and compete a Free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- Students applying must have an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) of $25,000 or less according to FAFSA
- The Michigan Achievement Scholarship requires eligible students to have a minimum full-time (12 credit hour) enrollment
- Eligible students must be enrolled into their future college or university within 15 months after completing high school
- Students currently in default on a federal student loan are not eligible for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship
