Kirtland Community College Secures State Funding for Campus Infrastructure Modernization
Kirtland Community College, a leading educational institution in Northern Michigan, has been awarded $420,000 from the State of Michigan for enhancing campus facilities and technology, further advancing the experience felt by students and surrounding communities.
The funding, a result of approval by Governor Whitmer and the Legislature during this year’s state budget meetings, is earmarked for a range of improvements falling under the categories of infrastructure, technology, equipment, maintenance, and safety (ITEM). Colleges receiving ITEM grants may also allocate funds toward the construction and expansion of on-campus housing, catering to the evolving needs of their student population. Kirtland’s funds will be geared toward modernizing facilities, academic program areas, and technology across its Grayling and Gaylord campuses.
“Kirtland offers its special thanks to the Governor and legislature for their leadership in supporting Kirtand and other Michigan Community Colleges. The funds will help the college strengthen its role as an economic engine for the communities it serves,” said Kirtland’s President Dr. Thomas Quinn.
Public Act 103 of 2023, which included a new, one-time appropriation of $32.8 million, was designated explicitly for infrastructure projects at 22 community colleges, including Kirtland. This legislation showcases the state’s commitment to nurturing educational institutions and fostering an environment of improved learning. The distribution of these funds began in January for all beneficiary colleges.
In 1999, a similar funding plan was approved; however, it exclusively supported the state’s public universities. This current allocation, focusing on community colleges, recognizes these institutions’ crucial role in shaping the academic landscape and helping local communities.
Brandy Johnson, President of the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA), expressed gratitude on behalf of all member colleges, stating, “Our colleges deeply appreciate the investment approved by the Governor and Legislature. Improving campus infrastructure will ensure more success for our colleges and their students.” This statement resonated across the Kirtland community, further providing support for the impact that well-maintained and technologically advanced campuses can have on student success and overall institutional effectiveness.
