Kirtland Community College Receives Consumers Energy Foundation Grant
Kirtland Community College has received a $10,000 grant from the Consumers Energy Foundation supporting their fall Kickstart program. The Kirtland Kickstart program was started in Summer 2023, provides incoming students with knowledge and exposure to what college life and courses will be like.
“We are proud to support the Kirtland Kickstart Program. This grant will benefit students from all backgrounds to have access to a brighter future, ” said Catherine Wilson, secretary and treasurer of the Consumers Energy Foundation. “We value our partnership with Kirtland Community College and are excited to see the impact these students make as they pursue their education in Northern Michigan.”
The grant will support the Kirtland Kickstart Summer Program which aims to empower high school graduates from classes 2024-2025 who have enrolled into college. Throughout the program, students will gain insights into various aspects of post-secondary education, including academic programs, financial aid opportunities, tutoring services, and career exploration. Additionally, participants will talk with Kirtland faculty to prepare for the expectations of college coursework.
“The Kirtland Kickstart program is a great way for new college students to build confidence while beginning college,” said Cesalee Kuffel, Kirtland Admissions Coordinator. “It is not just about registering for classes, but a well-rounded list of programming that creates success strategies from study habits, to support services and career planning.”
Students attending in-person sessions will be provided with breakfast, lunch, and snacks. As an incentive and aid in travel costs, each attendee of the in-person sessions will receive a $20-dollar gas card for every day they participate, college supplies such as a backpack, calculator and additional school supplies. Additionally participating students will have a chance to win larger prizes that include a laptop, iPad, sweatshirts, and more. This initiative is part of Kirtland’s commitment to supporting students in their educational journey.
