Forest Technology
The Forest Technology program at Kirtland Community College combines in person guided lab and field work along with online coursework. The program also leverages the expertise of local and regional industry professionals in the curriculum so that students can learn from the many voices of Northern Michigan’s forestry community. Additionally, students are provided with ample networking opportunities and paid summer internships towards the end of their degree.
There are essentially two career paths the students can take after graduation. The first path is joining the workforce after completing their internship. The other path is continuing with their education where they can complete a 4-year degree and earn their B.S. in Forestry from MSU. This path is designed to be streamlined through Kirtland as 100% of the credits earned when completing their AAS in Forestry Tech here at Kirtland are transferrable to MSU.
- Learn from private consulting foresters in how to set up timber sales, write management plans and work with landowners, loggers and mills.
- Gain insights from service foresters who work for the US Forest Service and Michigan Depart. Of Natural Resources in how they manage the public timberlands at both a local and landscape level.
- Take advantage of learning in Grayling with proximity to some of the largest regional mills along with thousands of acres of public timberlands.
- Leverage the additional resources that MSU has to offer as a student enrolled in both Kirtland and MSU.
