Gold Standard: Kirtland Recognized as a Leading College for Veterans in Michigan
Veterans matter. That belief has guided Kirtland Community College to earn Gold-level status for the fourth time in five years from the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA). This distinction signals Kirtland’s continued dedication to ensuring veterans have the resources, opportunities and respect they deserve.
“Our veterans and military connected students bring an incredible perspective and strength to the Kirtland community, receiving this Gold-level recognition from the MVAA reinforces the college’s promise to provide a seamless, supportive transition into higher education for those who have served,” said Kirtland’s Vice President of Student Services Michelle Vyskocial. “We are honored to be recognized again this year.”
The MVAA uses seven criteria to determine the scope of support offered to veterans, ranking schools as bronze, silver, or gold. Qualifications include having a dedicated point of contact for veterans, providing academic and career support tailored to veterans, offering on-campus services and strong connections to community resources, as well as tracking retention and graduation rates for veteran students.
“For veterans considering their next step in education, this recognition sends an important message: you have a place here at Kirtland. We recognize that transitioning from military service to college can come with unique challenges, and our goal is to make that transition as smooth as possible,” said Kemmoree Duncombe, Kirtland Director of Financial Aid and Veterans Certifying Official. “Whether it’s helping students navigate their VA education benefits, connecting them with campus resources, or supporting their academic goals, we want our veteran students to know they don’t have to navigate that journey alone.”
Veteran students have access to several resources at Kirtland, among them a dedicated Veterans Certifying Official to guide them through the Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits process. Kirtland also provides one-on-one advising and support to help with academic planning, financial aid, and navigating the transition from military to student life, access to campus and community resources, including tutoring, counseling, career services, and priority registration.
“Earning Gold-level recognition is something we’re proud of, but what matters most is the experience our veteran students have when they walk through our doors. Our commitment doesn’t end with helping them enroll or access their benefits. It’s about supporting them throughout their educational journey and helping them reach their goals. Our veterans have already given so much through their service, and we want to make sure they feel supported as they pursue this next chapter,” said Duncombe.
