Kirtland Kickstart Program: An Initiative for Students Seeking Early Engagement in The College Experience
Kirtland Community College announces 2nd annual Kickstart Summer Program, a comprehensive initiative designed to prepare high school graduates for the challenges and opportunities of college life. The program will blend online and in-person learning experiences, offering incentives, personalized advising sessions, and guidance for enrollment in Fall classes.
“Making the decision to attend college just brushes the surface of what is required to be a successful college student,” Kirtland Admissions Coordinator Cesalee J. Kuffel said. “The Kickstart program will offer students support with the college-going process, give them a stronger foundation for courses in English and mathematics, as well as offer financial help and guidance with applying for financial resources.”
The Kirtland Kickstart Summer Program aims to empower high school graduates from classes 2020-2023 who have yet to attend college, GED students, and those currently enrolled in dual enrollment programs. Scheduled for June 10-13 (in person), June 18-20 (online), and June 25 (in person) for awards presentation. All in-person sessions will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Throughout the program, students will gain insights into various aspects of post-secondary education, including academic programs, financial aid opportunities, tutoring services, and career exploration. Additionally, participants will receive instruction in English and Mathematics to better equip them for college-level coursework.
“We’re really excited to be able to offer this program to students in the Kirtland area,” Kirtland Dean of Liberal Arts John Thiel said. “I can’t wait for students to check out our campus, interact with our great staff and faculty and get a jump start on their college careers. Plus, students who finish the program are going to get some amazing rewards. What’s not to like?”
Students attending in-person sessions will be provided with breakfast, lunch, and snacks. As an incentive and aid in travel costs, each attendee of the in-person sessions will receive a $25-dollar gas card for every day they participate, along with opportunities to win daily prizes. Moreover, students who successfully complete the program, register for classes, and attend Kirtland in the fall will receive a laptop valued at $1,000 and a $500 credit at the campus store. This initiative is part of Kirtland’s commitment to supporting students in their educational journey.
Aligned with the Michigan Community College Association’s (MCCA) efforts to address learning loss resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic’s in-person interruptions, Kirtland’s Kickstart Summer Program is offered free of charge to all participants.
“The Kirtland Kickstart Summer Program provides college-bound students the opportunity to strengthen their English and mathematics skills, while familiarizing themselves with campus services before their first year of college begins,” said Kirtland Vice President of Student Services/Register Michelle Vyskocil. “This program will ultimately ease the transition to college and support postsecondary success.”
