Kirtland Set to Hold Summer Program for Students Wanting to Gain a Jump Start on College Courses
Kirtland Community College is set to hold a summer program focused on preparing high school graduates for college life. The Kirtland Kickstart Summer Program will encompass both online and in person learning, incentives to all who participate, and opportunities to meet with Kirtland advisors in order to enroll for classes beginning in the Fall semester.
“We’re really excited to be able to offer this program to students in the Kirtland area,” said Kirtland Dean of Liberal Arts John Thiel. “I can’t wait for students to check out our campus, interact with our great staff and faculty, and get a jump start on their college careers. Plus, students who finish the program are going to get some amazing rewards. What’s not to like?”
Open to high school graduates from classes 2020-2023 who have yet to attend college, GED students, and students who have taken or currently enrolled in dual enrollment, the Kirtland Kickstart Summer Program will take place in person on June 13-15, online from June 20-22, and finally in person again on June 28 for the conclusion of the program. All in person classes will run from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m…
All students who attend the summer program will spend time exploring just a few of the many areas of what a post-secondary education career can provide. Students will learn about academic programs, financial aid opportunities, tutoring, and even career exploration. Throughout the course of the program students will also receive instruction in English and Mathematics in order to expose and better prepare them for college level courses.
“Making the decision to attend college just brushes the surface of what is required to be a successful college student,” said Kirtland Admissions Coordinator Cesalee J. Kuffel. “The kickstart program will offer students support with the college going process, give them a stronger foundation for courses in English and Mathematics, as well as offer financial help and guidance with applying for financial resources.”
Students who participate in the program will be served breakfast, lunch, and snacks on all in person days, receive a $25-dollar gas card for each in person day they attend, and have a chance for additional daily prizes. All students who finish the program and enroll for fall courses at Kirtland will additionally receive a laptop in value of $1,000 and a $500 credit at the campus store.
Part of the Michigan Community College Association’s (MCCA) initiative to combat learning loss due to in-person interruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kirtland’s Kickstart Summer program is provided free of cost to all who attend.
“The Kirtland Kickstart Summer Program provides college bound students the opportunity to strengthen their English and Mathematics skills, while familiarizing themselves with campus services before their first year of college begins,” said Kirtland Vice President of Student Services/Register Michelle Vyskocil. “This program will ultimately ease the transition to college and support postsecondary success.”
