Kirtland adding online Cyber Security degree
Kirtland Community College is launching an Associate of Applied Science degree in Cyber Security that can be completed entirely online. It is the only fully online associate degree program available in the state.
Beginning in the Fall 2019 semester, Kirtland will offer this online program to prepare students with the critical skills needed to identify, analyze, process and correct threats to the security of IT systems in any industry. At this time, jobs in Cyber Security come with annual salaries on average of $12,000 higher than other computer-related jobs. Nationwide, employers report a great need for qualified Cyber Security employees; in the metro Detroit area alone, there are approximately 10,000 unfilled Cyber Security jobs at this time.
Expert instructors with a vast knowledge of the industry will deliver the online Cyber Security courses so students will gain perspective and learn from people who have experience in the industry, are familiar with the importance of different industry certifications and ready to share their knowledge. Students who attend full-time will be certified to work in the industry in two years.
“Cyber Security is one of the fastest growing industries in the country. The need for qualified employees is huge,” said Kirtland Vice President of Instructional Services Dr. Julie Lavender. “Our program is entirely online so students can complete their degree from anywhere at any time.
“The diversity of our online Cyber Security program, in combination with the delivery of instruction by industry experts, will provide many job options and industry certifications important to future employers,” said Lavender.
