Electrician Program
Electricians are not optional; they’re essential.
If you’re an electrician, you and your peers will eventually play necessary roles in every community, large and small, rich and poor, regardless of race or cultural outlook – everywhere in the developed world. Period. Think about that for a moment!
Because of how important electricity is to modern life as we know it, this particular profession is universally respected. So are the men and women who’ve completed all the training necessary to call themselves electricians and thus to be able to install, maintain and repair the systems and equipment that, literally, keep the lights on.
We work with students and help you succeed, whether you’re:
- a man or woman who (regardless of age) wants to make a career change and needs new skills
- coming straight from high school (or dual enrolled) and interested in exploring a career path
- already working in industry, perhaps an apprentice, already know a lot about the work, or your employer may have asked you to take specific classes
- working in industry and want to get to a higher level
- planning to become an electrical engineer
Electricians have varying levels of experience and licensing:
apprentice * journeyman * master
Kirtland is training and educating you to begin that journey, to become an apprentice, and to complete the educational requirements to sit for the journeyman’s exam.
After graduating from our program you’ll be able to:
- install residential and industrial electrical panels
- design and program programmable logic controllers
- install and troubleshoot building control systems
- install generators
- wire motors
- run wiring and conduit
Later in your career, after several years of experience and passing your journeyman’s license exam, there are many more directions your career can take, depending on your interests. If you eventually become a Master Electrician, the sky’s the limit. Here are a few careers for an advanced electrician:
- Maintenance for small or large commercial enterprises
- Biomedical equipment technician
- Licensed electrician
- Electrical technician
- Electrical foreman
- Construction manager
- Electrical project manager
- Electrical designer, and more.

Is this a program where YOU can excel and come out with a new profession?
If you agree with most of these ideas, the answer may be YES …
- I’m looking for a trade where I can make better than average income and provide some of the finer things in life to myself and my family.
- I want a career with staying power. I don’t want to be thinking about and needing to tool up again for a different profession in 10 – 15 years.
- It’s important to me to make progress and show both myself and others that I can succeed in college and in this highly respected trade. Very exciting!
- I’m a hands-on learner – the more time in the lab, the better!
- I take pride in the finished products of your work, being able to say, “I did that!”
- I have a high attention to detail.
- I enjoy problem solving.
- I like to know how things work! e.g. “How do I get that switch to turn on the green light?”
- I have a lot of drive and like to stick with a problem until it’s solved.
- I have a deep-seated respect for safety regulations and insist on operating ‘by the book’ when it comes to protecting myself, my fellow workers and clients.
- I like small classes where I can get a lot of hands-on attention from faculty.
- I’m willing to work hard and apply myself for the time period it takes to move from apprentice to journeyman and potentially beyond because I understand this kind of investment in my education will open doors to a much better life in the long run.
