Kirtland Community College Announces John Thiel as New Vice President of Academic Affairs
Kirtland Community College proudly announces the appointment of John Thiel as the institution’s new Vice President of Academic Affairs. Thiel’s promotion comes after a career spanning more than two decades at Kirtland, beginning in 2001 when he joined the college as a History and Humanities instructor.
“After reviewing a pool of 27 candidates, we are thrilled that John rose to the top and accepted the position,” said Kirtland President Dr. Gary Roberts. “With a long history of being involved in academic programming at Kirtland, we could not have hoped for a better person to fill this position.”
Thiel’s career at Kirtland spans a long journey in professional growth, academic excellence, and service to community college education. Starting as a faculty member in the Arts and Sciences department, Thiel earned a reputation for engaging students with his passion for History and Humanities. Over the years, he transitioned into increasingly prominent leadership roles, eventually being named Dean of Arts and Sciences in 2022.
As Dean, Thiel oversaw a broad portfolio of academic programs and led curriculum development. His collaborative leadership style and passion for educational innovation have been pivotal in enhancing the quality of instruction and student learning across many programs.
“It means a lot to me to have been chosen from a national search by my institution,” said Thiel. “It shows a lot of confidence in my abilities and hopes for the future of the position and my role in the college.
In his new role as Vice President of Academic Affairs, Thiel will oversee the college’s academic operations, including curriculum planning, instructional quality, accreditation processes, faculty affairs, and student educational services. He will work closely with the college president, executive leadership, faculty, and community leaders to shape the future of academic programming at Kirtland and act as a liaison between the college and state and national agencies.
Throughout his career, Thiel has championed initiatives that place students at the center of academic planning and decision-making. Under his leadership as Dean, Kirtland expanded its dual enrollment partnerships, increased online course offerings, and implemented student success initiatives that improved retention and graduation rates. He is widely respected for his thoughtful approach to academic policy and deep belief in community college education.
“I have 24 years and counting experience here. Twenty years on faculty, three and half years as dean in Arts and Sciences, so I am invested in this college,” said Thiel. “I’ve seen Kirtland through many ups and downs and think it has a bright future and hope that by choosing me, the search committee thinks I can play a vital role in that future.”
Thiel’s notable accomplishments during his tenure at Kirtland include:
- History and Humanities Instructor (2001-2021)
- Faculty Department Chair for Social Sciences and Humanities (2008-2012)
- Academic Program Curriculum Chair (2021-Present)
- Dean of Arts and Sciences (2022-2025)
- Michigan Community College Leadership Academy (2023-2024)
- President of Michigan Liberal Arts Deans (2024-Present)
- Assisted in the signing of several partnership and articulation agreements with universities, including the Dietetics and Nutrition transfer agreement with Central Michigan University and a partnership with Grand Valley State University for Physician Assistant and a Bachelor in Business Administration
Thiel holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in History from Michigan State University and is currently working towards his Doctoral Degree in Community College Leadership from Ferraris State University. He has also completed professional development and leadership training through the Michigan Community College Association and maintains active membership in professional organizations, including The American Historical Association and MCCCAO.
As Kirtland continues to expand its presence in northern Michigan, Thiel’s appointment underscores a continued commitment to academic excellence. His tenure as Vice President of Academic Affairs begins on July 1, and he will be working closely with faculty and staff to ensure a smooth transition and alignment of strategic priorities.
“I think one of the things that’s been good about Kirtland in all my time here is that we have been really adaptable,” said Thiel. “Community Colleges, in general, are usually very adaptable because they serve students who want to transfer to four-year institutions, they serve in trades education, serve area workforce needs, and also in health sciences programs. For that, we really need to keep our finger on the pulse of many agencies. I think because we are small and because we are so plugged into the local area, we have been able to do that well over the years.”
“That’s a goal of mine throughout my time here and into the future. It’s to do whatever I can do to help be one of the main faces of this college in the public as we continue to adapt and grow.”
