Gold Standard: Kirtland Recognized as a Leading College for Veterans in Michigan
Veterans matter. That belief has guided Kirtland Community College to earn Gold-level status for the third time in four years from the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA). This distinction signals Kirtland’s continued dedication to ensuring veterans have the resources, opportunities and respect they deserve.
Kirtland’s President, Dr. Gary Roberts, refers to the Gold-level achievement as an “honor,” saying, “As a community college located in a district alongside Camp Grayling, we feel it is our duty to support our local veterans, in whatever manner we can.”
The MVAA uses seven criteria to determine the scope of support offered to veterans, ranking schools as bronze, silver, or gold. Qualifications include having a dedicated point of contact for veterans, providing academic and career support tailored to veterans, offering on-campus services and strong connections to community resources, as well as tracking retention and graduation rates for veteran students.
“For students, attending a Veteran-Friendly School means they can count on a supportive environment that understands their unique experiences and needs,” said Kemmoree Duncombe, Kirtland Director of Financial Aid. “It shows that the college values their service, is committed to helping them succeed academically, and provides resources to make the transition to civilian and student life smoother. It gives veterans and military-affiliated students confidence that they will be respected, supported, and connected to the services they need to thrive.”
Veteran students have access to several resources at Kirtland, among them a dedicated Veterans Certifying Official to guide them through the Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits process. Kirtland also provides one-on-one advising and support to help with academic planning, financial aid, and navigating the transition from military to student life, access to campus and community resources, including tutoring, counseling, career services, and priority registration.
“Together, these services ensure that veteran students are not only able to access their benefits, but also feel fully integrated and supported in achieving their educational and career goals,” said Duncombe.
