  • In-district tuition, contact hours, and mandatory fees.

How do I Know if I Qualify?

To become eligible for the Michigan Community College Guarantee, qualifying students must:

    • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
    • Be a Michigan resident since July 1 of the previous calendar year.
      • If a dependent student, parent(s) must also be a Michigan resident since July 1 of the previous calendar year.
    • Graduate from high school in Michigan with a diploma or a certificate of completion or achieved a high school equivalency certificate in 2023 or after.
    • Enroll full-time as defined by the eligible institution.
      • Eligible institutions include Michigan Community Colleges and Tribal Colleges.
    • Enroll at an eligible institution within 15 months of high school graduation or earning a high school equivalency certificate.
    • Students are not eligible if they are in default on a federal student loan.
    • Meet the institution’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy.
    • Students may be eligible to receive the Michigan Achievement Scholarship for up to five consecutive years total, with no more than three years at Michigan Community College and Tribal College.
      • Students enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program at a Michigan Community College may be eligible to receive the Michigan Achievement Scholarship for up to five consecutive years.
    Complete your FAFSA

    What does in-district Mean?

In-district students are those who reside within the Crawford, Oscoda, Ogemaw, and Roscommon Intermediate School District (C.O.O.R) and pay property taxes to support Kirtland. All Michigan residents contribute to Kirtland, along with the other state community colleges, through state taxes which help supplement student tuition. Since Kirtland is partially funded by taxpayers, different tuition rates exist for students who are resident, non-resident and out-of-state.

The Community College Guarantee covers In-district tuition, contact hours, and mandatory fees. Students who attend a community college that is “out-of-district” will still receive a significant discount. Contact the Financial Aid Office at [email protected] or 989-275-5000, Ext. 257 to confirm your residency status.

    Renewal Requirements

You can renew your scholarship for up to three years at a community college or Tribal college.

To renew your scholarship, you must:

    • Complete the FAFSA annually
    • Continue to live in Michigan
    • Continue to enroll in college full time.
    • Continue to earn credits and meet your college’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy.

You’re also eligible to transfer to a four-year college or university. If you’re earning a bachelor’s degree, you can renew your scholarship for up to five consecutive years (up to three years at a community college or Tribal college).

Note: Students are not eligible for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship if they’re in default on a federal student loan.
