John Thiel joined Kirtland Community College in August 2001 and spent over 20 years teaching history and humanities as a member of the full-time faculty.
He was promoted to Dean of Arts and Sciences at the beginning of 2022 and serves as president of the Michigan Liberal Arts Deans association.
In July 2025, John was chosen to become Kirtland’s Vice President of Academic Affairs. In this role, he leads academic operations including curriculum planning, instructional quality, accreditation, and faculty affairs. He collaborates with executive leadership, faculty, and community partners, and serves as a liaison to state and national agencies.
John holds both a B.A. and M.A. in History from Michigan State University, and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Community College Leadership through Ferris State University.
John enjoys running, is obsessed with the Detroit Tigers, and travels as much as possible.
