PRO 4.020 Curricular Offerings
- Deans and directors will monitor enrollment on a regular basis to identify sections for possible cancellation due to inadequate enrollment. There are several factors that must be considered before canceling a class including impact on student success, effectiveness of operations, de-registration and its effect on enrollment, previous enrollment history and availability of alternative sections.
- When it becomes clear during the registration process that a class will not reach the minimum number of students, the class will be cancelled as soon as possible to allow the students in the class to select other classes. Deans/Directors will notify faculty of their cancelled classes. Students will be notified of the cancellations by Registrar’s Office. The students’ academic advisors will also be notified so they can contact the student via email, phone or text to discuss alternatives.
- Classes with borderline enrollment should be monitored closely. Enrollment should be re-evaluated and a cancellation decision made no later than the Thursday prior to the start of the term. The meeting to determine final class cancellations will include the Vice President of Instructional Services, Vice President of Students Services, and academic deans/directors.
- Exceptions to the class cancellation policy may be made for the following special considerations:
- pilot classes
- classes that, if cancelled, would delay an enrolled student’s graduation date. (independent study may be offered with faculty agreement)
- classes that are of high strategic value to the program/discipline
- classes with an identified, definite source of enrollment prior to the start of the class
- classes that, if cancelled, would leave students with no alternative class to replace those credits.
- nature of the section requires low enrollment (e.g., directed study).
- section is required to teach out students from old to new curriculum.
- Classes that are canceled for three sequential semesters should be considered for course suspension by the curriculum and instruction committee (CIC).
- If there are 2 low sections of the same course at different locations, course schedules are reviewed to determine best course location based on student’s current schedule and home address.
