Biology Transfer Pathway

This pathway is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in fields that require a biology major.  Biology covers a wide variety of careers that can be loosely grouped into two main categories: Microorganism/Cellular Processes Based Careers and Organismal & Ecology Based Careers.

Microorganism/Cellular Process Based Careers can lead to: 

  • Domestic animal & agricultural research careers such as soil scientist, food technologist, toxicologists, parasitologists with state and federal agencies, non-profits & private agencies, fermentation scientists in food production, etc. 
  • Industrial research careers such as fermentation production of industrial solvents, biochemists, biotechnologist, industrial hygiene and safety, etc. 
  • Human health research careers such as geneticist, genetic counselor, pharmacologist, biomedical engineer, biomanufacturing, etc.

Organismal & Ecology Based Careers can lead to:

  • Wildlife or forestry management careers such as conservationists, park rangers/naturalists, wildlife rehabilitation specialists, etc.  
  • Domestic animal or agricultural management could include animal trainers/nutritionists, food inspectors, range animal or plant breeders, etc. 

Biology Transfer Pathway Details

EM Majors (4 cr.)

BIO 11800 Evolution & Ecology for STEM majors (4 cr.)

CHE 10101 General Chemistry I AND CHE 10102 General Chemistry I Lab (5 cr.)

CHE 10201 General Chemistry II AND CHE 10202 General Chemistry II Lab (5 cr.)

ENG 10303 English Composition I OR ENG 10305 Integrated Composition (3-4 cr.)

ENG 10403 English Composition II (3 cr.)

MTH 13000 College Algebra (4 cr.) 

MTH 18001 Pre-Calculus (4 cr.)

MTH 22002 Calculus I (4 cr.)

SPE 10500 Public Speaking OR SPE 11401 Interpersonal Communication (3 cr.) (Speech course should be chosen based on transfer needs. See academic advisor for assistance.)

Total core pathway credit hours: 39-40

The student will then select additional electives to reach a minimum of 60 credit hours in consultation with an advisor and the desired transfer college/university.

HUM 20500 The Individual and Society (3 cr.)

PHL 21000 Introduction to Ethics (3 cr.)

Social Science:

PSY 10100 Introduction to Psychology (3 cr.)

GEO 10000 World Geography (4 cr.)

Mathematics:

MTH 22102 Calculus II (4 cr.)

Science:

CHE 20101 Organic Chemistry I AND CHE 20102 Organic Chemistry I Lab (5 cr.)

CHE 20201 Organic Chemistry II AND CHE 20202 Organic Chemistry II Lab (5 cr.)

*BIO 21002 Microbiology Lecture (3 cr.)

*BIO 21003 Microbiology Lab (1 cr.)

* BIO 21002 and BIO 21003 are strongly recommended for students pursuing a focus on cellular/microorganismal biology.

If the student’s schedule permits, taking available courses during the summer can lessen fall and winter semester course loads.

Fall Semester 1 (14-15 credits)

BIO 11700 Cell & Molecular Biology for STEM Majors (4 cr.)

ENG 10303 English Composition I OR ENG 10305 Integrated Composition (3-4 cr.)

MTH 13000 College Algebra (4 cr.)

Winter Semester 1 (16-17 credits):
