Hazing

Hazing is prohibited by college policy and the law. More information about hazing can be found in the Student Code of Conduct.

Kirtland defines hazing as

Any action or situation that recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student or that willfully destroys or removes public or private property for the purpose of initiation or admission into or affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in, any registered student organization.

Hazing includes, but is not limited to

Any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the elements, forced consumption of any food, liquor, drug, or other substance, or any other forced physical activity that could adversely affect the physical health and safety of the individual to extreme mental stress, such as sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact, forced conduct that could result in extreme embarrassment, or any other forced activity that could adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the individual, or any willful destruction or removal of public or private property.

All forms of hazing are strictly prohibited and are a violation of the Student Code of Conduct.  Kirtland will follow the disciplinary process outlined in the Student Code of Conduct for hazing violations.

Any activities as described in this definition upon which the initiation or admission into, affiliation with, or continued membership in a registered student organization is directly or indirectly conditioned shall be presumed to be forced activity, the willingness of an individual to participate in such activity notwithstanding. Any registered student organization or Kirtland student that commits hazing is subject to disciplinary action.

All reports of hazing will be investigated using the BIT referral process in conjunction with the Public Safety Department.

Campus Hazing Transparency Report

Kirtland’s Campus Hazing Transparency Report summarizes findings concerning any established or recognized student organization found to be in violation of an institution’s standards of conduct relating to hazing as defined by the Student Code of Conduct and hazing policies.

Kirtland’s Campus Hazing Transparency Report is updated semi-annually and is available at the following: https://cm.maxient.com/chtr.php?KirtlandCC

The Campus Hazing Transparency Report must include each incident involving a student organization for which a finding of responsibility is issued relating to a hazing violation, including:

  • The name of such student organization;
  • A general description of the violation that resulted in a finding of responsibility, including:
    • whether the violation involved the abuse or illegal use of alcohol or drugs,
    • the findings of the institution, and
    • any sanctions placed on the student organization by the institution, as applicable; and
  • The dates on which:
    • The incident was alleged to have occurred
    • The investigation into the incident was initiated
    • The investigation ended with a finding that a hazing violation occurred, and
    • The institution provided notice to the student organization that the incident resulted in a hazing violation.

Report an incident of hazing

Any incidents of hazing can be reported using the BIT referral process, or reported directly to Public Safety.
