Reference Librarian

Assists patrons in using the tools of research, provides expertise and assistance in answering reference questions, conducts information literacy classes, and ensures coverage for reference services.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*

  • Interact and provide assistance to patrons (students, faculty, staff, and guests) in identifying, locating, and accessing information on-campus and online.
  • Develop, teach, and assess information literacy in various environments at various college locations including one-time visits to classes and in-person or online presentations.
  • Assist faculty with the integration of library research and information retrieval skills in their courses both face-to-face and in the course management system.
  • Provide answers to reference questions.  Conduct reference interviews as necessary.
  • Work as a member of a team with the goal of excellent customer service.
  • Design and update guides (online/electronic and print) to improve access and use of information including, but not limited to, the navigation of databases, style and format guides, subject and course-specific guides, copyright, and plagiarism.
  • Assist in the supervision and training of work-study students employed at the library.
  • Assist in collection development management by reviewing, evaluating, and recommending new materials as well as evaluating and weeding materials (print and electronic).
  • Perform copy cataloging and original cataloging of print and electronic resources for patron accessibility.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the library’s website.
  • Carry out special projects promoting the library and its resources.
  • Participate in professional development. Maintains current awareness in the field.
  • Serve as the person in charge in the absence of the Director.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.

SUPERVISION – Works under the general supervision of the Director of Library and Tutoring Services.

ATTENDANCE – Individuals in this position are generally expected to be present during the peak business hours of the library, and may occasionally be asked to work more than their regularly scheduled hours.  Hours of work may vary between fall and winter semesters and the summer session.

WORKING CONDITIONS– Conditions are those of a typical college library environment, requiring the ability to communicate with library patrons, provide effective instruction in a technologically advanced classroom environment, and read and enter data and written communications in electronic format in a timely manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree with documentation showing coursework in library science.
  • One to three years of library experience, and two or more years of teaching (information literacy preferred) in at least the high school level, or combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of the position.
  • Experience with an automated library system.
  • Knowledge of and experience in using appropriate resources, including electronic, for locating information effectively and quickly.
  • Experience with a current version of a course management system (Canvas preferred).
  • Experience in cataloging (Library of Congress preferred).
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team and to interact effectively with others in an educational environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Willingness to learn new skills in a constantly changing environment.
