In our Criminal Justice program, you’ll learn about law enforcement, the judicial system, and criminal behavior. You’ll study topics like criminal law, investigations, criminology, and ethics. You’ll also gain skills in report writing, critical thinking, and understanding legal procedures, preparing you for a career in law enforcement, corrections, or legal services.

Our Criminal Justice program includes:

  • Criminal Justice Pre-Service (AAS)

Criminal Justice is the system of practices and institutions involved in upholding social control, deterring and mitigating crime, and sanctioning those who violate laws through legal punishment. The field includes various disciplines, such as law enforcement, corrections, courts, and forensic science. It aims to protect society, ensure justice, and rehabilitate offenders through structured legal processes.

Choosing Criminal Justice as a profession offers a sense of purpose, as you will be contributing to the safety and well-being of your community. Working in criminal justice allows you to be directly involved in enforcing the law, preventing crime, and helping individuals navigate the legal system. This field offers a wide variety of career opportunities, including law enforcement, probation, parole, corrections, and the court system, each playing a critical role in maintaining public order and justice.

At the end of the program students will be able to:

  • Exhibit professionalism by maintaining proper equipment, attendance, personal appearance, and conduct.
  • Use critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to properly navigate Criminal Justice scenarios.
  • Use appropriate Communications Skills in Criminal Justice, specifically with radio communication, written communication, verbal and social communication, and non-verbal communication.
  • Effectively operate technology and navigate technology for research in the Criminal Justice field.
  • Define fundamental subject matter and concepts as related to Criminal Justice.

The criminal justice field includes law enforcement, corrections, security, investigations, court and administrative services, and juvenile justice. Each area requires individuals who can speak and write well and who can work well with colleagues and the community.  Employers in this field will be looking for people who are skilled in management, investigative techniques, analysis of data and critical thinking. Students who choose one of the following programs develop these abilities and are prepared for successful careers in a variety of positions in federal, state and local law enforcement agencies as police, corrections or security officers or a number of administrative positions. 

If you choose to apply for the Kirtland Regional Police Academy to become a law enforcement officer,  this program is approved by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). Graduates of this program are eligible to take the MCOLES examination and after passing the examination, they are considered certifiable. After being hired, they are eligible to apply for state licensing and a state police officer number. After employment, graduates have one year to complete additional training for continued licensing.

State licensing exams pass rate percentage:  100%

Preparing our criminal justice students to attend our Regional Police Academy or to transfer to a four-year University is the ultimate goal of our program.  It will always be our priority to provide the finest in educational opportunities and we strive to exceed all expectations of our students.   We utilize a group of expert instructors who have decades of real-world law enforcement experience that will be applied into each course. This experience is the reason why Kirtland Community College Criminal Justice Programs prepare our students to excel in their careers.
